The sun in Anchorage

Three weeks have passed. I used the last two days to check out Anchorage, to write some postcards, and get my gear packed for the trip back to Europe. Right now I am sitting here at the airport and wait for my Condor flight DE 6067 back to Frankfurt and then to Vienna, thinking about my time here.

Denali !

Denali – a name full of promises, wilderness, fierceness. At the same time northern Americas highest peak and one of the US’ largest Wilderness and National Park Areas. A landscape where human beings are nothing more than small dots in a dramatically beautiful and at the same time potentially dangerous environment. An area, where you are up to yourself and the means you are carrying with you. Denali – land of the bears and wolves, of caribou and moose, of green valleys and everlasting winter .

Gold Rush!

After a couple of days without internet access finally: 11 Mbit/s WiFi! Time for an update. The recent days were mainly characterised by Canadian and Alaska gold rush times. Sounding names like Yukon, Klondike, Dawson City, Whitehorse, Skagway, White Pass, Yukon Navigation Company and so forth played a major role in these days. Only a few hours had a different focus: hot springs (but unlike our thermal water pools – read on why) and cold Beringia (how the American continent was first populated)

Top of the World - Top of the Mountains

The first day that greets me with sun shine already in the morning. The day must be a good one with such a start :) I am heading for the showers (unmetered!) in the middle of the pine trees. Good start, and then reality strikes: hot water becomes warm becomes hand warm becomes cold. Huaaa! And what about this rather refreshing stream of cold air coming down from the ventilation above the shower? Hm, I can’t help developing the suspicion that metering the showers isn’t necessary here: Small boiler + cold air stream = short showers? Must be some kind of camp ground algebra. Breakfast again makes up for this – first time outside, enjoying the warm sun rays on my back.

Day 4 – Wednesday, 23rd July 2008 - What a day!

I am sitting at the camp fire, watching the flames eating slowly up the wood. Recent rainfalls made it all wet, so the fire is rather hesitating. Doesn’t matter, the camp ground is in the midst of a spruce forest and the meat is still frozen, so let’s take it easy.
What a day it has been, since we arrived here!

Valdez is not in Mexico

Another day, millions of other impressions. Today it is driving the motorhome on railroad tracks, experience Russian architecture in Alaska, sail the catamaran in south Alaska waters, and see the oil shipping port of Valdez (yes, THAT Valdez). How come that I already know all this? Consider the time lag between you reading this in Europe and me being in Alaska ;-)

Due north - to Alaska

So here we go. 7.05 AM, Vienna Airport: Flight OS 121 takes me to Frankfurt, where I am to board an airplane to Anchorage, Alaska. What is to come is a three week journey through Alaska, with a RV (for my german speaking friends: a "Wohnmobil").
I hope to see the Pacific coastline, Denali national park, lots of mountains and glaciers and also lots of wildlife. Oh, and there's Elmo and his folks that need to be visited ;-). My journey will mainly concentrate on discovering the land, while two good friends of mine, Karin and Andreas, will enjoy Alaska's and Canada's beautiful underwater world on their scubadiving tour further southeast. By the way, if you want to read their holiday story, go to http://www.diving.co.at/ and check out the next newsletter. I am sure there will be a report on it. But back to my trip: If everything runs smoothly, the journey will take me from Alaska to Canada and back. Here is the route… but wait! Let’s make it interesting: Follow this journey blog and you will see, where I am each time ?:

The last Inka

Hola chicas y chicos,

this is Radio Mikey again and this is probably my last feature about this trip to South America. Meanwhile I am back in Lima, writing a short update until I meet my friend Peter, who I owe so much for organising this whole journey, for a last Pisco Sour.
Tomorrow at 4 AM (once again) a transfer service will pick me up and take me to the airport. First flight leg to Bogota (arrival 9.10 in the morning) where I might meet the just-married Matt and his lovely wife again. The "big" flight then is somewhat around 5 PM, taking me first to Paris and then to Vienna, where I will arrive Monday some time after noon. I hope I get some sleep during the flights, otherwise my students at the "Fachhochschule" will have a hard time keeping me awake ;-)
